My Secret Shame

thosegirlsagain.jpg

They have really big feet!!!

How does one even begin to write a post about the Olsen twins without first apologizing for writing it in the first place?

I paused for a few moments after writing that sentence and have been lost in a swirl of thoughts ever since. Why the confounding emotions? Why the shame? Why the fascination? Why the hell did I even go?

In many regards, New York Minute is a frightfully dreadful, yet somewhat entertaining action/comedy film starring the most overly merchandised teenagers in history. I admit to feeling some guilt, some shame in admitting that I’ve always been a bit fascinated by Ashley and Mary-Kate and that I chose to go to the screening. I’m somewhat mortified to write about it – yet I feel compelled to share my experience as well.

I wish I could accurately describe why those kids’ antics interest me. I think it boils down to the utter commoditization of identity. Those girls are their own brand and are each worth $150 million. Guess they’re doing something right.

There’s bigger issues to dwell on for sure, so I’m gonna give up trying to rationalize why I went. If you want a serious review, look somewhere else. I'll leave it with this: there are some cute outfits, they score cute boyfriends and have one helluva day in New York City. Who could ask for anything more?

Which Olsen is which in this picture, I wonder? My heart tells me that Ashley is in the teal dress.
